What happens when you stop drinking for a month?
Everyone is different, and a month isn’t a medical treatment. But people who take 30 days off often notice the same things. Here’s what to expect and what research has found.

The first few days
If you usually drink a few times a week, the first days can feel restless, especially in the evenings when you’d normally have a drink. Sleep can be a little unsettled at first. These feelings usually ease quickly.
If you drink heavily every day, stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms like shaking, sweating or anxiety, which can be dangerous. Talk to a doctor before you stop.
Week one to two: sleep and mornings
Alcohol can help you fall asleep but tends to disrupt sleep later in the night. Without it, many people say they wake up feeling more rested and that mornings are easier. No hangovers helps too.
Week two to three: energy, mood and focus
People often report more energy, steadier moods and better concentration. You may also notice how often you used to drink out of habit rather than wanting to.
Week four: the bigger picture
By the end of the month, the most common wins are practical: money saved, weekends that feel longer, and a clearer view of your own drinking.
What the research says
- A small 2018 study in BMJ Open found that moderate-to-heavy drinkers who stopped for a month saw improvements in blood pressure, insulin resistance and weight compared with people who kept drinking.
- Research from the University of Sussex on Dry January participants has found that many were still drinking less months later.
- The benefits depend on how much you drank before and what you do afterwards. A month off is a reset, not a cure.

In the US, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free, confidential and open 24/7: 1-800-662-4357. If you drink heavily every day, talk to a doctor before stopping suddenly, because alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous.
